The Orleans Parish School Board will take another crack Friday at selecting a temporary member to replace Ira Thomas, who resigned earlier this month after being charged by federal authorities with taking a bribe.
The board attempted to pick a replacement last week, but the six remaining members deadlocked 3-3, with competing factions unable to muster a majority for either former Principal John Brown or motivational speaker Happy Johnson.
Those two had emerged as the board’s favorites from nine candidates who submitted their names to fill the seat on an interim basis.
The next vote will come during a special meeting at 5 p.m. in the school district’s administrative office at 3520 Gen. de Gaulle Drive.
If the board is unable to make a decision Friday, the appointment likely will be left up to Gov. Bobby Jindal.
The person filling the spot will represent Thomas’ former district, which encompasses New Orleans East and the Lower 9th Ward, until a special election is held this fall.
