New Orleans officials have begun training contractors on the city’s new rules on local hiring and use of disadvantaged business enterprises on city contracts.
The training sessions are being held at H. Giles Martin Hall on Delgado Community College’s City Park Campus, 615 City Park Ave. They are open to the public.
The city’s local hiring policy, passed late last year, requires businesses with applicable city contracts to make “good faith efforts” to hire Orleans Parish residents and to use the city as a first source for worker recruitment, referral and placement.
The new disadvantaged business enterprise requirements, also passed last year, give more teeth to a policy that at least 35 percent of the value of city contracts should go to DBEs. A DBE is a socially or economically disadvantaged firm.
Training sessions on the local hiring rules will be held from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesdays, Jan. 19, Jan. 26 and Feb. 2.
Sessions on the DBE policy will take place from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. Thursdays, Jan. 21 and Jan. 28.
