A 24-year-old man’s body was found in the water of a drainage canal at Independence and the Interstate 10 Service Road in Metairie, the Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office announced.

The body, found lying facedown in the drainage canal, showed no signs of trauma, Col. John N. Fortunato said in a press release.

An autopsy will be performed by the Jefferson Parish Corner’s Office to determine the cause of death, he said.

A witness, who told investigators about meeting the victim Thursday afternoon while sitting and drinking along the canal bank, described seeing the man jump into the water to go swimming around 8:30 p.m. Thursday, Fortunato said.

The witness also described returning to the area around 8 a.m. Friday and discovering the body in the water, Fortunato said.

Homicide investigators do not suspect foul play at this time, however, anyone with information in this matter is asked to contact our investigations bureau at (504) 364-5300, Fortunato said.
