Two-term St. Charles Parish Councilman Larry Cochran will square off next month against former Councilman Terry Authement in a runoff for parish president.

With all precincts reporting, Cochran, 53, a Democrat from St. Rose, had about 40 percent of the vote. Authement, 63, a Republican from Boutte, drew about 26 percent.

Retired Sheriff’s Office administrator and State Police Maj. John Cornwell, 67, a Democrat from Luling, had about 18 percent.

During the campaign, Cochran touted his leadership skills gained as serving council chairman and as chief of the St. Rose Volunteer Fire Department for 17 years.

Authement spent three terms on the council and worked for 33 years at Monsanto, where he supervised maintenance until retiring in 2007.

Incumbent Parish President V.J. St. Pierre Jr. was barred by term limits from seeking re-election.
