Incumbent Cedric Floyd has maintained his lead in the Jefferson Parish School Board District 5 race so far, early results show. With 22 of 28 precincts reporting, Floyd has more than 57 percent of the votes.
Floyd has so far received 5261 votes in his race against former board member Karen Barnes and candidate Sharlayne Jackson-Prevost, who is running for the first time.
Floyd has the backing of the Jefferson Federation of Teachers union, while Jackson-Prevost has the backing of Jefferson Parish business groups. Barnes, who said the board needs more transparency, said she would work with the union. All candidates are Democrats.
