In the District 2 race for Jefferson Parish School Board, union-backed candidate Ricky Johnson defeated his business-backed opponent Rickeem Jackson, 54 percent to 46 percent, with all 21 precincts reporting.

Johnson got 4,495 votes to Jackson’s 3,864.

The race was one of two being closely watched, with the agendas of two competing interest groups in the balance.

With only one exception, board members are either backed by business groups or the teacher’s union, and the last four years have seen business-backed candidates enjoying a majority.

Johnson got 38 percent of the vote in the Nov. 4 primary to Jackson’s 34 percent.
