With all 98 precincts reporting, Republican Beth Mizell has edged out Democrat “Mickey” Murphy in the runoff race for the state Senate District 12 seat.

Mizell won the race with 58 percent of the 33,437 votes.

She will replace Sen. Ben Nevers, who was elected to the Senate in 2004 after one four-year term in the House. Mizell, a Franklinton resident, ran a close race against Nevers four years ago.

Mizell was endorsed by SOUTHPAC and operated a business in St. Tammany Parish for 15 years. She operates a cattle farm and has been an active Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA) since 2001, where she is appointed by judges to advocate for the best interests of abused and neglected children.

The district covers St. Tammany, Tangipahoa and Washington parishes.
