Incumbent Cedric Floyd has edged out two opponents to keep his seat on the Jefferson Parish School Board in District 5.

With all 28 precincts reporting, results show Floyd won 6,788 votes, or more than 55 percent of the total. He competed for the seat against former board member Karen Barnes and candidate Sharlayne Jackson-Prevost, who was running for the first time.

Floyd, a Democrat, has the backing of the local Jefferson Federation of Teachers union.

Jackson-Prevost ran with the support of the Jefferson Parish business groups. During her campaing, Barnes promised to work with the union.
