Incumbent Cedric Floyd is taking the lead in the Jefferson Parish School Board District 5 race so far, early results show. With six of 28 precincts reporting, Floyd has 2,087 votes, or 58 percent of the total.

The race features a rematch between Floyd and former board member Karen Barnes, plus first-time candidate Sharlayne Jackson-Prevost.

Barnes has taken 22.5 percent of the votes so far, with Jackson-Provost close to 19 percent.

Jackson-Prevost has the backing of Jefferson Parish business groups, while Floyd has support from the Jefferson Federation of Teachers. Barnes said the board needs more transparency, and that she would work with the union. All candidates are Democrats.
