Delgado Community College has hired Clifford Barthe’ as its men's basketball coach.

Barthe’ replaces Tommy Smith in the position following Smith’s retirement last month. The announcement was made to Delgado’s student-athletes by Chancellor Monty Sullivan and Athletic Director Joe Scheuermann on Monday afternoon, August 19.

Barthe’ brings a wealth of basketball knowledge to his position. He previously coached at St. Augustine High School in New Orleans, where he was a member of the Athletic Department staff for two tenures totaling 23 years. During his time with the Purple Knights, his teams compiled an impressive 170-50 record, which included a State Title in 2011 and a State Runner-Up position in 2012. In addition, he also led St. Aug to numerous quarterfinalist finishes and several district championships. Following the 2012 season, he was also recognized as the Metro New Orleans Coach of the Year. He was named the All-Catholic Schools Coach of the Year in 2011 and 2012.

For the past two seasons, he has served as Director of Basketball Operations at Tulane University under Coach Ed Conroy, where he managed the program’s administrative operations. Barthe’ also served as Head Basketball Coach and Athletic Director at Dillard University from 2003-2005 prior to Hurricane Katrina.

On being named to the position, Coach Barthe’ says “I'm very happy to be given this opportunity. I think that Delgado is a great place that helps its students advance both academically and athletically. The basketball program’s tradition speaks for itself and we will strive to advance that tradition both on and off of the court!”

Delgado Athletic Director Joe Scheuermann: “We are thrilled to have a coach of Cliff’s caliber joining our athletic department. Having coached every level of basketball in our city, we feel that his ties to our community and his winning tradition will serve as a platform that will continue to build and enhance Delgado’s great program for years to come.”

Delgado Chancellor Monty Sullivan adds “Delgado is excited to usher in a new era of Dolphin Basketball with the arrival of Cliff Barthe’. Coach Barthe’ is well known within the community and has been successful on and off the basketball court teaching, coaching, and mentoring young men to prepare them not only for game day, but for life. We look forward to the success we know he will bring to Delgado and to our student-athletes.”

The appointment of Barthe’ as Head Coach is effective immediately.

Barthe’ holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Political Science from Xavier University of New Orleans and a Master of Science from Carnegie-Mellon University. He has one daughter, Angele (married to Justin) and a grandson, Justin, Jr.
