LAFAYETTE — The McNeese baseball team will step out of conference play Tuesday as it travels to take on in-state rival Louisiana-Lafayette. First pitch is slated for 6 p.m.

McNeese State (17-9, 5-1 Southland) swept Northwestern State over the weekend in the Cowboys’ conference home opener. The Cowboys have eight wins in their past 10 games.

The Cajuns (19-8) lost two out of three to Western Kentucky in Sun Belt play over the weekend.

Senior left-hander Jason Gibson (1-0) will start for McNeese.

UL-Lafayette will counter with right-hander Chase Traffica (3-1), who has a 6.75 ERA and 20 strikeouts in seven appearances.

McNeese is batting .278 as a team with 10 home runs and 49 doubles. The Cowboys are led by junior left fielder Jackson Gooch, who is batting .349 with 10 doubles, a triple, three homers and 25 RBIs. Shortstop Connor Lloyd is batting .341 with three doubles and 12 RBIs.

The Cajuns are led by third baseman Tyler Girouard who is batting .434 with four doubles, three triples, four homers and 20 RBIs. Catcher Michael Strentz is batting .350 with 19 runs, 10 doubles, a triple, three homers and 19 RBIs.
