By the numbers
PK Adam Griffin: 12-for-19 on FGs, 48-for-49 on PATs; P JK Scott: 48 for 47.0 average; KR Christion Jones: 30 for 749 yards, 25.0 per return; PR Jones: 17 for 142, 8.4 per return
PK Sean Nuernberger: 11-for-19 on FGs. 79-for-79 on PATs; P Cameron Johnston: 39 for 45.1 averge; KR Dontre Wilson: 22 for 528 yards, 24.0 per return; PR Marshall Jalin: 19 for 241 yards, 12.7 per return
These teams don’t have to punt that often, but when they do, it’s entertaining. Scott, a freshman, is third in the nation with his 47.0 average and his 54.2 percent placed inside the 20 is tops in the country. Johnston, the pride of Geelong, Australia, helped the Buckeyes place first in the country in opponents’ average starting field position by putting 22 kicks inside the 20 (Scott had 26).
The team’s two outstanding punters pretty much cancel each other out. So do the kickers, in opposite ways. After going 4-4 in the opener against West Virginia, Griffin has hit only eight of 15 attempts since. Nuernberger, a freshman, has been equally shaky for the Buckeyes. The return games are also even.
