SAN DIEGO — Louisiana Tech will face No. 15 TCU in the 2011 San Diego County Credit Union Poinsettia Bowl, bowl officials announced Sunday.
The pairing matches champions from the Western Athletic and Mountain West conferences.
Kickoff in Qualcomm Stadium is set for 7 p.m. CST on Wednesday, Dec. 21. It will be televised by ESPN and carried by the ESPN radio network.
TCU (10-2, 7-0) recently won its third consecutive Mountain West title, the only team to do that in the short history of that league.
TCU is ranked as high as 15th in the coaches poll and 16th in the Associated Press poll while Louisiana Tech (8-4, 6-1 WAC) received votes for the second consecutive week.
Despite being separated by only 289 miles, TCU, of Fort Worth, and Louisiana Tech have never met on the football field. There is a lot of familiarity with TCU on the Bulldogs coaching staff, however.
Louisiana Tech assistants Stan Eggen and Mark Tommerdahl were assistants at the school from 1998-2000 when the Horned Frogs played in three bowls.
Both teams have won seven straight, the fourth-longest streaks in the nation.
The Bulldogs, the bowl’s home team, will be making their first trip to the Poinsettia Bowl and the school’s first bowl game in California. Tech is 2-2-1 all-time in (Division I) bowl games with four appearances in the Independence Bowl and one appearance in the Humanitarian Bowl, now called the Famous Idaho Potato Bowl.
Tickets for the game are on sale through the Louisiana Tech ticket office and range in price from $35 to $55. To purchase tickets, call (318) 257-3631, email email@example.com or visit LATechSports.com.
