KATY, Texas — Dontae Cannon scored 23 points, including the go-ahead basket with 24 seconds remaining, and McNeese State defeated Nicholls State 62-59 in the opening round of the Southland Conference men’s basketball tournament on Wednesday. Cannon also made a pair of free throws with four seconds to play, and fifth seed Nicholls missed a chance to tie it at the end.

The eighth-seeded Cowboys (14-16) will play fourth-seeded Southeastern Louisiana in the second round Thursday.

Fred Hunter led the Colonels (9-21) with 21 points and 14 rebounds.

Women

McNEESE STATE 63, NORTHWESTERN STATE 45: Three straight scores from McNeese freshman Allison Baggett gave the Cowgirls (17-13) a double-digit lead Northwestern State could not overcome.

Baggett scored 15 points, as did her sister Ashlyn. Caitlyn Baggett added 14.

Keisha Lee scored 19 points to lead Northwestern State (12-18).
