A familiar face is set to coach baseball in a different Ascension Parish place.

Mike Toups, a former Dutchtown High School coach, has been hired as East Ascension’s baseball coach.

“Coaching baseball is something I have a passion for,” Toups said.

“For me, that has never changed.”

The hiring of Toups fills the final void on the EAHS coaching staff. He replaces Wayne Grenfell, who resigned in July. Grenfell had a 74-60 record in four seasons at East Ascension.

“We look at this long and hard and felt like (Toups) was the best choice for the job,” EAHS Athletic Director Paul Bourgeois said.

Toups served as baseball coach at Dutchtown from the time the school opened in 2002 through 2007. He led the Griffins to a Class 4A state title in 2004 and to second round of the 5A playoffs in 2007.

Before the 2008 season, Toups resigned for personal reasons. At the time, his father, Don, was battling cancer.

Toups entered private business, becoming an insurance agent.

Under Louisiana High School Athletic Association rules, Toups will be a nonfaculty coach and will retain his business interests.

“To be honest with you, I never really wanted to leave coaching,” Toups said.

“At that time, there was a lot going on in my life and there were other things that were more important. Coaching was something I always wanted to do again. I’m excited to get this opportunity.”
