GRAMBLING — Malcolm Cyrus ran for 180 yards and a touchdown, and Alabama State snapped Grambling seven-game winning streak with a 37-23 victory.
Alabama State (6-5, 5-4 Southwest Athletic Conference) went up 34-23 with 14:27 left on Daniel Duhart’s third touchdown pass, a 40-yarder to Ephraim Henderson. Preston Clark’s 44-yard field goal capped the scoring about 8 minutes later.
Johnathan Williams’ 60-yard touchdown pass for Grambling (7-4, 7-1) cut the Tigers’ deficit to 28-23 with 14:17 to play.
Cyrus has 1,500 yards rushing on the season. With one game to go, he is 207 shy of the program record Brad Baxter set in 1986. Alabama State rushed on 54 of its 79 plays with Cyrus taking 27 carries.
Grambling’s first conference loss sets up a season-ending showdown against rival Southern at the Bayou Classic in New Orleans on Nov. 29. The winner takes the SWAC West division crown.
NORTHWESTERN STATE 48, NICHOLLS STATE 21: In Natchitoches, Zach Adkins threw for 180 yards with five touchdowns and ran for a sixth as Northwestern State rolled past Nicholls.
Garrett Atzenweiler pushed Northwestern State (6-5, 4-3 Southland) ahead with a 1-yard touchdown run and Adkins threw scoring strikes of 17 yards to Zach White and 24 yards to Cody Jones for a 28-7 halftime lead.
Adkins connected with Jones and Tuff McClain in the third quarter, and scored on a 3-yard keeper with 9:31 remaining.
Adkins went 17 of 20 — completing his first nine attempts — without an interception.
Jones had four receptions for 68 yards. Daniel Taylor finished with 80 of the Demons’ 300 rushing yards.
Michael Henry paced Nicholls (0-11, 0-7) with 146 yards on 29 carries, including a 19-yard touchdown on the games’ opening drive. Beaux Hebert hit Demon Bolt for a 2-yard score to make it 35-14 in the third.
