The LSU rugby team is among the 12-team field for the D1A playoffs.

The field was announced last week, and LSU will host Arizona after going 6-0 to win the Red River Conference championship. LSU is 13-0 overall.

The match against Arizona will be noon Saturday at the University Recreation Field at the corner of Gourier and River roads. The final will be May 7 in Moraga, California.

Weightlifting

HATCH LIFTERS WIN SIX MEDALS AT NATIONAL MASTERS CHAMPIONSHIP: Six lifters from the Gayle Hatch Weightlifting Team qualified for the 2016 Pan American Weightlifting Championship to be held in the San Juan, Puerto Rico, on June 17-19 based on their efforts at the National Masters Weightlifting Championship held in Savannah, Georgia on March 31 to April 3.

The six lifters won four gold medals, one silver medal and one bronze medal.

Glenn Harris, who lifted in the 75-79 age group, 69-kg weight class, won gold with a 50-kg snatch and a 60-kg clean and jerk for a 110-kg total (242 pounds).

Dane Hussey, in the 65-69 age group, 56-kg weight class, won gold with a 35-kg snatch and a 50-kg clean and jerk, for a 85-kg total (187 pounds).

Warren Byrd, in the 65-69 age group, 77-kg weight class, won bronze with a 60-kg snatch and a 75-kg clean and jerk, for a 135-kg total (297 pounds).

Berlyn Wedgeworth, in the 65-69 age group, 85-kg weight class, won gold with a 72-kg snatch and a 100-kg clean and jerk, for a 172-kg total (378 pounds).

David Meltzer, in the 60-64 age group, 105-kg weight class, won silver with a 79-kg snatch and a 100-kg clean and jerk, for a 179-kg total (394 pounds).

Guillermo Bujanda, in the 35-39 age group, 105-plus-kg weight class, won gold with a 126-kg snatch and a 170-kg clean and jerk, for a 296-kg total (651 pounds).

The lifters are coached by Gayle Hatch.

Youth golf

HEINE WINS U.S. KIDS GOLF TOURNAMENT: Ava Heine of Baton Rouge won her second straight U.S. Kids Golf tournament at Webb Park Golf Course.

Heine shot a 9-hole score of 44 to win the girls 8-9-year-old division.

Mattie Purgahn of Orange, Texas, was second with a 50, while Sophia Macias of Denham Springs finished third with a 56. Callie Johnson was fourth (72).

Men’s golf

PELICAN POINT 9-9-9 WINNERS: The team of Jay Leblanc and Logan Leary had the first-place gross score in the first flight, while the team of Joe O’Banion and Sam Lavigne had the top net score in the first flight in the Pelican Point MGA 9-9-9 tournament on Saturday at Pelican Point.

Malcolm Dugas and Paul Castro had the second-place gross score in the first flight, while Steve Ryan and Jerry Flood had the second-place net score.

In the second flight, Jason Adams and Trevor Adams had the first-place gross score, and Cameron Thoroughman and Wes Merrifield had the top net score. Tony Frederic and Clay Waddell had the second-place gross score, while Russell Williams and Jimmy Whiddon had the second-place net score.

Steve Martin and Ricky Carter had the winning gross score in the third flight, while Chuck Rousselle and Randy Simon had the top net score. Kevin Harrison and Guy Schexnayder had the second-place gross score, while Bruce Leblanc and Timothy Bourque had the second-place net score.

In the fourth flight, Vijay Kotian and Skipper McInnis had the winning gross score, while Jimmy Anderson and Doyle Philippe had the top net score. Nicholas Templet and Glenn Schexnayder had the second-place gross score, and Pat Lofton and Tommy Leffingwell had the second-palce net score.

Women’s golf

BENGALS WINNERS: The Island No. 1 team of Karla Neal, Brenda Mayer, Kara Hill and Pat Picard had a 61 for the first-place gross score, and the Westdale No. 2 team of Carolyn Lacey, Donna Ashmore, Michelle Remington-Remo and Dot Taylor had a 53.5 for the first-place net score at the Baton Rouge Women’s Interclub Golf Association Playday.

The BenGals Ladies Golf Association hosted the event at Greystone last week. The event was a team scramble with handicap and 11 foursomes representing seven clubs.

Santa Maria’s team of Peggy Berniard, Gracie Purvis, Patti Nelson and Debi O’Neill had a 64 for the second-place gross score, while the Pelican Point No. 1 team of Aaron Bourque, Karen Snell, Chris Crow and Madelyn King had a 56.5 for the second-place net score.

Pat Morgan (17 points) was the winner among five players playing a modified stableford scoring system.

Basketball

LOUISIANA HEAT ELITE TEAMS WIN TITLES: The Louisiana Heat Elite AAU basketball fourth-grade through eighth-grade teams, based out of Geismar, played in the Georgia Cup II Showcase last weekend with the fourth-grade and seventh-grade teams winning their divisions.

In the 13-under championship game, the Louisiana Heat Elite scored a 59-56 win over the Georgia Coastal Ballers.

In the 10-under championship game, the Louisiana Heat Elite grabbed a 55-36 victory over the Atlanta Select/Roswell Bombers.

Tony Lewis (10U), Quinndarius Dabney (12U) and Gage Larvadain and Raeland Johnson (13U) earned all-tournament honors.

Horseshoes

GILMORE WINS ST. JUDE TITLE: Bayou Vista’s Tim Gilmore went 5-0 to take the Class A and tournament title at the St. Jude Spring Horseshoe Fundraiser on Saturday at Kemper Williams Park in Patterson.

Edie Corso of Destrehan was second in Class A, followed by Pat Pertuit of Marrero.

In Class B, Bill Seither of Buras won the title, followed by Jimmy Percle and Al Dodson of Morgan City.

Randy Giroir of Berwick defeated Cheryl Matt of Lake Charles in a 40-shoe playoff to win the Class C championship, while Larry Pertuit of Marrero was third.

Ron Smith of Lake Charles won the Class D title, followed by Glen Caillouet of Raceland and Chris Rogers of Morgan City.
