Nicholls true freshman wide receiver Damion Jeanpiere caught five passes for 112 yards with a 52-yard TD in last week’s loss to McNeese State. Hezekiah White, a sophomore linebacker for Nicholls, ranks fourth in the SLC with 9.2 tackles per game. SFA coach Clint Conque, a Baton Rouge native, is a former Nicholls linebacker who’s in the school’s hall of fame.

STAT THAT MATTERS: Grambling quarterback Johnathan Williams has thrown 12 touchdown passes in the Tigers’ last two games.

NOTES: Grambling, which has won three consecutive games after an 0-2 start, has scored at least 50 points three times this season — including the past two weeks. Grambling posted a 59-27 win over Jackson State last Saturday after scoring 70 points one week earlier against Prairie View. Grambling’s defense allowed 490 passing yards to Jackson State’s LaMontiez Ivy, but the Tigers managed to sack him five times and also had two interceptions. Williams, who leads a Grambling team that ranks second in the SWAC in total offense at 469.8 yards per game, averages 296.2 passing yards with 18 touchdowns and eight interceptions in five games.

NOTES: Tulsa’s defense hasn’t been all that ferocious in allowing 38.8 points and 591.0 yards per contest. ULM, which is averaging 303.8 yards per game, had its longest play from scrimmage this season on Garrett Smith’s 69-yard pass to Ajalen Holley in a 51-31 loss against Georgia Southern last week. Smith is averaging 220.5 passing yards per game in completing 64.4 percent of his passes with eight touchdowns. ULM coach Todd Berry, a Tulsa graduate, played quarterback for the Golden Hurricane from 1979-81 before suffering a career-ending knee injury.

Both feature productive offenses; SLU is averaging 387.2 yards per game after piling up a season-high 539 yards in a win over Lamar last week, while McNeese averages 448.0 yards and 36.2 points per game. SLU coach Ron Roberts has the best record in SLC play since taking over as the Lions’ coach in 2012, going 21-3 against conference foes. NOTES: After a 43-14 blowout of UL-Lafayette last week, Louisiana Tech returns to Conference USA play against UTSA. Quarterback Jeff Driskel, a Florida transfer, leads a Tech offense that has averaged 503.6 yards per game (16th in FBS), the third-best five-game start in school history. Driskel has at least one rushing and one passing touchdown in four of his first five games with the Bulldogs. He’s already thrown for 1,461 yards and ranks 18th in the FBS with 292.2 yards per game. Senior running back Kenneth Dixon needs 7 rushing yards against UTSA to reach 4,000 yards for his career.

The Bobcats average 35.8 points per game, while the Cajuns average 26.3. The problem is on defense, where Texas State allows 49.5 ppg and UL-Lafayette 33.8. ...
