SEC tournament tops LSU softball slate

Three home tournaments, along with a Big 12 power matchup and the SEC’s signature event in May highlight the 2015 LSU softball schedule announced by coach Beth Torina on Monday.

Coming off of an NCAA regional final berth in 2014, the Tigers will square off with 14 teams that made it to the NCAA tournament last season, with three making it all the way to the Women’s College World Series and the eventual national champion Florida.

“This year’s schedule will be exciting for our team and for the fans in Baton Rouge,” Torina said. “It is a great mix of teams from all over the country and from many different conferences that will challenge us from day one and will make sure we are ready to go from the start.”

LSU opens the season hosting the North Carolina State and Memphis on Feb. 6-8, before welcoming Central Arkansas, Hofstra and Notre Dame on Feb. 13-15.

Gymnast Finnegan signs with LSU

The LSU gymnastics team added one of the nation’s top recruits when Sarah Finnegan signed her National Letter of Intent with the Tigers Monday.

A native of St. Louis, Finnegan is a senior international elite gymnast who served as an alternate for the U.S. Gymnastics Olympic team, known as the “Fierce Five,” that won gold at the 2012 Summer Olympics in London.

“It’s an incredible addition because Sarah is such a fine young lady,” LSU coach D-D Breaux said. “Her gymnastics is phenomenal, but when you add to that how much of a wonderful person she is, we are truly excited to have her in this class.

“I have to give a lot of credit to (LSU associate head coach) Jay (Clark) because he has worked so hard in his consistent, tenacious effort to recruit the best gymnasts to LSU. Sarah certainly fits in that category along with our other signees Lexie Priessman, Julianna Cannamela, McKenna Kelley and Kaitlyn Szafranski.”
