ELON, N.C. — Senior Caitlyn Baggett scored 23 points and twin sister Ashlyn Baggett scored her 2,000th career point and made her 300th career 3-pointer to lead McNeese State’s women’s basketball team to a 66-58 win over Elon on Saturday in the second round of the Women’s Basketball Invitational.
Freshman Allison Baggett added 10 points off the bench as the Cowgirls (20-14) advanced to the WBI semifinal round. McNeese will play at the winner of the Lamar-South Dakota game. The date and time of that game have not been determined.
Ashlyn Baggett scored 14 points on 6 of 19 from the field and made two 3-pointers. Caitlyn Baggett hit on 6 of 12 from the field and 4 of 6 from 3-point range. She also made 7 of 8 from the free-throw line. The Cowgirls got some excellent play off the bench from junior NeTanya Jones and Shayln Riley. Jones came away with a career-high 10 rebounds. Jones finished with five points.
With the game tied a 44-44, McNeese took the lead for good with 9:15 left to play on a Caitlyn Baggett 3-pointer. After Elon (19-14) cut the lead to one at 56-55 with 4:52 to play, McNeese went on a 7-0 run to take a 63-55 lead with 2:40 left to play.
The Cowgirls worked the clock down on each possession in the final two minutes and Elon fouled, sending the Cowgirls to the line.
