Squirrel Run Golf Club of New Iberia rallied to take a 15-shot victory with a 10-under-par 422 in the Louisiana Golf Association Club Team Championship on Sunday at The Island in Plaquemine.
The Squirrel Run team came into the final round in third place at 7-under par and posted a 3-under par for the individual stroke play final round. Saturday’s round featured four-ball stroke play with each team counting its best two of three four-ball scores.
Brody Leblanc led Squirrel Run with a 4-under-par 68 on Sunday, which featured individual stroke play with the team’s score determined by the best four of six individual scores. Nick Trahan (69), Scott Shea (71) and Danny Duplantis (77) were other contributors to the team’s effort on Sunday.
The Island No. 1 team of Daniel Preston, Tommy Toups, Blaine Patin, Michael Drury, Luke Gower and Seth Holley finished second with a 5-over-par 437, while the Louisiana South Amateur Golf Tour team of Britt Guillory, Jeff Lorio, Mick Huffman, Mike Kapp, Chris Donaldson and Jeremy Guilbeau finished third with a 7-over-par 439.
Sunday’s round featured under-par efforts from The Island No. 2’s Paul Viguet (68), Squirrel Run’s Leblanc (68) and Trahan (69), The University Club’s Ben Adams (71) and Squirrel Run’s Shea (71).
Fifteen teams from around the state competed in the event.
PELICAN POINT COUPLES TOURNEY WINNERS NAMED: The team of Kenny Riley, Sandy Riley, Joe Erickson and Connie Erickson won the Spring Couples tournament held Sunday at Pelican Point.
The team of Jimmy Wilson, Carolyn Wilson, Mark Stevens and Debbie Stevens finished second.
BREC GOLF LEAGUE WINNERS NAMED: Alex Bookter and Terry Hebert fired 37s to tie for the title in the BREC Golf League at Dumas Golf Club on April 29.
The format was a two player best ball low individual gross score.
Don Breaux and Deborah Donchess (39) tied for third.
The teams of Don Breaux and Alex Bookter and Pat Milton and Greg Crowell (34) tied for first with the low team gross score, while Jason Miller and Deborah Donchess (36)was third.
LOUISIANA TEAMS COMPETE IN LIBERTY MUTUAL TOURNAMENT: Scott Brady, Mike Lutgring, Jeff McCann and Scott Thompson of Baton Rouge recently placed fifth in a one-day competition at the Liberty Mutual Invitational National Championship at Pinehurst Resort.
The team shot a 5-under-par 67 on Course No. 4.
Also, Tim Howard, Ashley Rhoney and Gus Rantz IV of Lafayette and Matt Heinz of Baton Rouge recently finished in the top 10 at the Liberty Mutual Invitational National Championship at Pinehurst Resort. The team finished with a final-round score of 62 on Course No. 2, which is the site of the U.S. Open and U.S. Women’s Open.
BATON ROUGE SOCCER TEAMS WIN TITLES: A number of Baton Rouge Soccer Club teams won championships at tournaments played in Mandeville on April 25-27 and Lafayette on May 2-4.
The BRSC 02 girls Black team won the U12 LSA State Girls Cup C1, while the BRSC 02 boys Red team won the U12 LSA State Boys Cup C2.
Also, the BRSC 03 boys White team won the U11 Svenska Cup, while the BRSC 04 boys Black team won the U11 Copa Del Ray Cup and the BRSC 04 boys Red team won the U10 Boys Recreational State Cup.
The BRSC 04 girls Red team won the U10 Girls Recreational State Cup.
The Roug-A-Roux won the U14 Boys Recreational State Cup, and the Tornados won the U12 Boys Recreational State Cup.
Additionally, a number of teams were finalists in tournaments, including the BRSC 01 boys Black team in the U13 LSA State Cup Boys C1, BRSC 01 boys Red team in the U13 LSA State Cup C2, the BRSC 02 boys Black team in the U12 LSA State Cup Boys C1, the BRSC 03 boys Red team in the U11 Boys Coppa Italia Cup, the BRSC 03 girls Maroon team in the U11 Girls Feminine Cup and the BRSC 04 girls Maroon team in the U10 Girls Recreational State Cup.
