NACOGDOCHES, Texas — Nicholls State starter Brandon Jackson allowed no runs on five hits in eight innings, and the Colonels held off a ninth-inning rally to beat Stephen F. Austin 5-3 in Southland Conference baseball Sunday afternoon at Jaycees Field.

Jackson (4-2) struck out six and walked one for the Colonels (29-24, 18-9) who are tied with Northwestern State for third in the Southland, one game behind Sam Houston State and Texas A&M-Corpus Christi.

Tyler Duplantis, who was 2-for-3 with two RBIs and extended his on-base streak to 15 games, hit an RBI single to score Seth Stevens and gave Nicholls State a 1-0 lead in the second.

The Colonels got four hits in the inning but left the bases loaded.

Nicholls State added two runs in the fourth when Duplantis scored on a ground out and Leo Vargas had an RBI single to bringing in Darius Knight.

Another two runs in the fifth, sparked by Duplantis’ RBI double to score Christian Correa and David Zorn’s sacrifice fly to bring home Charles Morton.

Releiver John Santriano allowed Stephen F. Austin to put together a two-out rally in the ninth, keyed by Conner Fikes’ two-run triple. Fikes scored on the play after a throwing error.

Stevens and Correa each had two hits for Nicholls.

The Colonels will host McNeese State for a three-game Southland series next weekend, starting at 6 p.m. Thursday.

McNEESE STATE 5, SOUTHEASTERN LOUISIANA 3: In Lake Charles, McNeese State scored four runs in the first three innings and held off Southeastern Louisiana to avert a Southland Conference series sweep.

Jameson Fisher and Andrew Goldbold each had three hits for Southeastern ((31-22, 16-11 Southland).

McNeese State (28-23, 17-10) was led by Andrew Guillotte, who was 3-for-5 with two runs, and Jackson Gooch, who was 2-for-4 with two runs.

Bryce Kingsley (5-3) earned the win, and Cory LaPeze picked up his second save.

Kyle Cedotal (3-3) took the loss.

Southeastern will host Northwestern State from Thursday through Saturday.,

McNeese State travels to Nicholls State.

NORTHWESTERN STATE 4, UNO 2: In Natchitoches, Demons reliever Austin Tanner (2-1) allowed only two base runners in six innings after UNO took an early 2-0 lead at Brown-Stroud Field.

Northwestern State (30-21, 18-9 Southland) scored four runs in the fourth inning to complete the three-game series sweep and lock a spot in the Southland Conference tournament.

Chase Daughdrill and C.J. Webster each had two hits for the Demons.

UNO (11-35, 2-25) was led by Samuel Capielano, who was 2-for-3 and scored a run.

The Privateers will host Central Arkansas in a three-game series beginning at 6:30 p.m. Thursday to finish the season.

Northwestern State will play its final midweek game at LSU at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday before its final series at Southeastern Louisiana beginning at 6 p.m. Thursday.
