St. Michael the Archangel is off to perhaps its best start in school history. The Warriors (6-0, 2-0) could be ranked in the Class 4A top 10 this week and are in the thick of the District 6-4A race.

Week 7 of the high school football regular season brings the ultimate measuring stick for coach Eric Held’s team. St. Michael hosts fourth-ranked Lutcher (5-1, 3-0) for a 6-4A showdown Friday at Louisiana Leadership Institute’s Doug Williams Stadium.

“This may be the biggest regular-season game St. Michael has ever played,” Held said. “Lutcher is one of the those programs everybody wants to be. They’ve won state titles and make deep runs in the playoffs every year.

“They’re where we definitely aspire to be. This gives us a chance to see where we are.”

The Lutcher-St. Michael game helps highlight the Week 7 schedule that includes a playbook full of key district games for Class 5A to 1A.

Action begins Thursday with another 6-4A game. Broadmoor (3-3, 1-2) hosts Tara (2-4, 0-2) looking to bounce back from a two-game losing streak.

“It’s definitely going to be a big game,” Lutcher coach Tim Detillier said. “Hopefully, St. Michael will be in the top 10. We can’t say this one is for the district title because you still have games to play. But whoever wins is definitely in the driver’s seat.

“We’ve never played at Doug Williams Stadium before, and we’re looking forward to that. Our fans travel well, and I know the St. Michael fans are excited, so it’s got all the ingredients of a good one.”

The list of weekly key games in the Baton Rouge area’s two 5A districts continues. Second-ranked Dutchtown (6-0, 1-0) ousted one Ascension Parish rival, St. Amant, last week. Now the Griffins host the other, East Ascension (4-2, 0-1), in District 5-5A. McKinley (3-3, 1-0) hosts Catholic High (1-5, 1-0), while Woodlawn (2-4, 0-1) hosts St. Amant (4-2, 0-1) in other 5-5A games.

Scotlandville (5-1, 0-1) looks to rebound from its loss to Denham Springs. The Hornets travel to face preseason favorite Zachary (5-1, 1-0) in 4-5A. Denham Springs (4-2, 1-0) travels to Live Oak (2-4, 0-1), while Walker (3-3, 1-0) travels to Central (2-4, 0-1) also in 4-5A.

The other 6-4A contender, Plaquemine (3-3, 2-0), winner of two straight, travels to Istrouma (0-6, 0-3).

In Class 3A, teams face contrasting challenges. Parkview Baptist (3-3, 1-0), ranked 10th, hosts Baker (1-5, 0-1), a team coming off an overtime loss to West Feliciana, in District 6-3A.

Meanwhile, another unbeaten, Port Allen (6-0, 1-0) faces its ultimate test, hosting top-ranked St. Charles Catholic (6-0, 1-0) in 7-3A. The other 6-3A game is West Feliciana (4-2, 1-0) vs. Glen Oaks at Olympia Stadium. In 7-3A, Brusly (4-2, 1-0) hosts St. James (0-6, 0-1) and Donaldsonville (2-4, 0-1) travels to E.D. White (3-3, 0-1).

Third-ranked University (6-0, 1-0) is coming off a win over No. 6 Episcopal (5-1, 0-1) to open District 7-2A play. This week, the Cubs meet Capitol (1-5, 0-1), while Episcopal hosts Redemptorist (2-4, 1-0). The Dunham School (3-3, 1-0) travels to Northeast (2-4. 0-1).

Class 1A also features a showdown when St. John (4-2, 1-0) travels to White Castle (2-4, 1-0), the defending 1A state champion, in 9-1A action. Southern Lab (4-2, 1-0), coming off a win over previously unbeaten Archbishop Hannan (5-1, 0-1), hosts Mount Hermon (2-4, 0-1) in 7-1A. Also in 7-1A, Christian Life (4-2, 1-0) travels to Varnado (2-4, 0-1).
