MONROE — Garrett Smith threw three touchdown passes and ran for another and Louisiana-Monroe beat Nicholls State 47-0 on Saturday night.

Ajalen Holley had 155 yards receiving with two touchdowns for the Warhawks (1-1), who rebounded from their 51-14 loss on the road against Georgia last week.

Smith ran for a 10-yard touchdown and connected with Holley on touchdown passes of 13 and 47 yards. Smith also threw a 17-yard scoring strike to Harley Scioneaux to help the Warhawks build a 40-0 halftime lead. Smith was 26 for 33 for 370 yards passing. Rashon Ceasar added 10 catches for 97 yards receiving.

The Warhawks finished with 593 yards of total offense.

Tuskani Figaro was 10 for 17 for 101 yards passing, and Michael Henry had 77 yards rushing for Nicholls State in its season opener.

MCNEESE STATE 43, INCARNATE WORD 6: In Lake Charles, Daniel Sams threw for 181 yards and one touchdown as McNeese State opened the season and Southland Conference play with a win over Incarnate Word.

McNeese State (1-0, 1-0 Southland) was slated to open the season against LSU last weekend but the game was cancelled because of inclement weather.

The Cowboys held a slim 9-0 lead at the half but scored 20 unanswered points in the third quarter to take control. The McNeese State defense shut down the Cardinals run game, limiting them to 12 yards for the game. Trent Brittain and Jordan Scelfo threw for 215 yards to give Incarnate Word (1-1, 0-1) 227 total yards. McNeese State rolled up 406 total yards.

Derrick Milton rushed for 75 yards and one touchdown and Tavarious Battiste hauled in three passes for 64 yards for the Cowboys.

BETHUNE-COOKMAN 56, GRAMBLING 53: In Grambling, Larry Brihm Jr. and Quentin Williams combined to throw for 463 yards and six touchdowns as Bethune-Cookman scored late and held on for a win over Grambling.

Trailing 46-41 with 3:37 remaining in the game, Williams hit Jawill Davis, who finished with 199 yards, on a 29-yard scoring strike to retake the lead 49-46. Bethune-Cookman added another score with 1:48 left when Anthony Jordan ran in from 41 yards out. Grambling quickly marched down the field and Johna Williams hit Chester Rogers with a 12-yard scoring strike to close to 56-53 with 54 seconds left.

The game was tied at 14 at the half and remained close throughout

Quentin Williams completed 17 of 22 passes for 244 yards and three touchdowns while Brihm was 17-of-26 for 219 yards and three scores.

Johna Williams threw for 326 yards on 30-of-47 passing.
