Longtime Franklinton High School football coach Shane Smith joined the Southeastern Louisiana football coaching staff, SLU coach Ron Roberts announced on Monday.
Smith will be an assistant coach on the offensive staff, working with the wide receivers. Smith joins the SLU staff after two decades of coaching at the high school level in Louisiana.
Smith spent the previous 16 seasons as the football and track coach at Franklinton, leading the Demons to seven district championships and a Class 4A state title in 2010.
A three-time Class 4A state coach of the year and four-time district coach of the year at Franklinton, Smith also served as the president of both the Louisiana Football Coaches Association (LFCA) and Louisiana High School Coaches Association (LHSCA).
Smith earned his bachelor’s degree in kinesiology and health studies from Southeastern in 1996, and his master’s degree in educational leadership in 2008.
SEASON TICKET RENEWAL DEADLINE EXTENDED: The deadline for football season ticket renewals has been extended to May 10.
Those who wish to purchase new season tickets may purchase a non-refundable new season ticket deposit. Those who do so will be contacted to purchase tickets before the public can purchase tickets. Applying for the deposit can be done online at RaginCajuns.com, over the phone at (337) 265-2357 or at the Cajundome Box Office.
Following the deadline, the ticket office will process upgrades and any additional requests from season ticket holders.
Season tickets are anticipated to go on sale to the public June 1.
State NFL free agent signings
LOUISIANA-LAFAYETTE: Former Cajuns receiver Jamal Robinson (Jaguars), linebackers Dominique Tovell (Saints) and Darzil Washington (Seahawks), and offensive linemen Mykhael Quave (Giants) and Donovan Williams (Bears) received free agent deals over the weekend.
Tovell agreed to a free agent contract with New Orleans, while Robinson, a first-team All-Sun Belt selection, signed with Jacksonville.
Washington, Quave and Williams earned mini-camp invites.
SOUTHEASTERN LOUISIANA: Former Southeastern Louisiana defensive back Denzel Thompson received an invitation to rookie minicamp with the Seattle Seahawks.
