Northwestern State

NATCHITOCHES - Northwestern State players begin checking into dorm rooms at noon and get fitted for their equipment at the athletic fieldhouse starting at 2 p.m.

The Demons will then have a series of meetings planned throughout the evening.

Northwestern State will go through more orientation meetings Wednesday before the 95 players in camp practice in Turpin Stadium for the first time Thursday. The veterans will work out from 9:40 a.m.-noon with about two dozen newcomers and select veterans going through a 5:50 p.m. session Thursday.

“We’re ready to get off to a fast start even before we get on the field for practice,” third-year Northwestern State coach Bradley Dale Peveto said. “We’ve got a lot of orientation and business to tend to. We’ll have conditioning tests Wednesday morning, we’ll have three academic meetings, we’ll go through some fun and motivational activities and we’ll talk a little football along the way.

“Thursday morning, we’ll be hoping to see some good carry-over from our veterans and based on how hard they have worked in the summer conditioning, we expect to be able to have a very productive practice. Thursday evening, we’ll get our new guys going through the paces and coach them up. We’ve got four days before we bring everybody together, and we don’t want to miss a beat when we reach that point.”

The Demons have 59 letterwinners, including nine offensive and seven defensive starters, returning from last season.

The Demons have preseason scrimmages slated Aug. 13, 20 and 24 in Turpin Stadium.

All practices and scrimmages are open to the public.
