LAFAYETTE — J.J. Thomas scored 15 points on 6-of-8 shooting and Louisiana-Lafayette pulled away in the second half for an 84-57 men’s college basketball victory over Nicholls State on Sunday.

The Ragin’ Cajuns (3-3) never trailed but led just 36-31 at halftime at the Beryl Shipley Classic, where they won two of three games.

ULL outscored the Colonels (1-4) 17-7 in the first 6:02 of the second half to take control. Thomas had five points in that stretch, and Darnell Jackson and Kadeem Coleby had four each. Jackson finished with 12 points and Coleby 11.

Chris Talkington scored 17 points for Nicholls State and Trevon Lewis had 15 in his first start for the Colonels.

Men Monday

BLUE MOUNTAIN AT SLU: In Hammond, Southeastern Louisiana wraps up a three-game homestand at 7 p.m. Monday when it faces NAIA opponent Blue Mountain College at the University Center.

Brandon Fortenberry leads SLU (2-1) in scoring at 21.0 points per game. Roosevelt Johnson averages 14.7 points and 7.3 rebounds.

Blue Mountain (4-2) is led by Devante Pulliam, who averages 17.1 points and 8.6 rebounds.

NORTHWESTERN STATE AT CINCINNATI: Northwestern State visits Cincinnati at 6:05 p.m. Monday.

Junior point guard Shamir Davis leads Northwestern state (2-2) in scoring with a 13.8 average. Gary Roberson averages 11.5 points. William Mosley averages 8.8 points, 10.5 rebounds and 3.5 blocks.

TENNESSEE TEMPLE AT UNO: The University of New Orleans seeks its third straight win when the Privateers host Tennessee Temple at 7 p.m. Monday at Lakefront Arena.

UNO (2-2) is led by Antonio wertz at 9.8 points per game.

Tennessee Temple is 3-4.

ULM AT MISSISSIPPI STATE: In Starkville, Miss., the University of Louisiana at Monroe will play for the fifth time in 11 days when it visits Mississippi State at 7 p.m. Monday.

ULM is 0-4 after a 63-60 loss at Southeastern Louisiana on Saturday.

Mississippi State is 4-1, including a 689-60 win over No. 18 Texas A&M and a 67-57 win over No. 15 Arizona. The Bulldogs are led by Arnett Moultrie, who averages 15.2 points and 11.2 rebounds. Dee Boss averages 16.0 points and 3.2 assists.


ALABAMA STATE AT NICHOLLS STATE: In Thibodaux, Nicholls State will make its home debut at 2 p.m. Monday against Alabama State.

Sumar Leslie leads the Colonels (1-1) in scoring (12.0 ppg), followed by LiAnn McCarthy (11.5), former St. Michael standout KK Babin (10.5) and Alisha Allen (10.0).

Alabama State (0-2) is led by Danielle Gazaway with 14 points per game.

UNO AT TULANE: In New Orleans, the University of New Orleans women’s basketball team heads Uptown to face Tulane at 7 p.m. Monday as the two in-city rivals play for the first time since 2003.

Mirjam Sipos leads UNO (0-3) at 13.7 points per game. Yosha Watson averages 10.0 points and 9.7 rebounds.

Tulane (3-0) is led by Olivia Grayson with 16.3 points, Danielle Blagg with 14.0, and Tiffany Dale with 13.0 points. Brett Benzio averages 10.0 rebounds.

NORTHWESTERN STATE AT SOUTH ALABAMA: In Mobile, Ala., Northwestern State vists South Alabama at 7:05 p.m. Monday.

The Lady Demons (1-2) are led by Trudy Armstead with a 15.7 scoring average. Jordi James follows at 12.7. Armtead and Jasmine Bradley are averaging 6.3 rebounds.
