BAINS — Dennis Bell passed for 231 yards, including two touchdown passed to Greg Freeman, and also scored the game-winning touchdown in overtime, lifting West Feliciana to a 37-30 victory over Baker on Friday night at WFHS.
Bell’s game-winning score came on a 1-yard run after Baker rallied twice to send the District 6-3A opener to force the overtime period.
Benton Tolliver scored on an 18-yard run, and Austin Taylor added a 4-yard touchdown run to help the Buffaloes (1-5, 0-1) score 16 fourth-quarter points. Tolliver also caught a 22-yard scoring pass from Treylon Anderson.
Bell and Freeman connected on scoring plays of 68 and 21 yards. Freeman finished with 153 receiving yards for the Saints (4-2, 1-0). Bell also threw a 30-yard touchdown pass to Deldrick Harris.
PORT ALLEN 26, ST. JAMES 21: In St. James, quarterback Darian Claibourne scored the game-winning touchdown on a 40-yard in the fourth quarter to keep PAHS (6-0, 1-0) unbeaten after its first District 7-3A game.
Claibourne ran for 137 yards on 14 carries and scored four touchdowns. He had scoring runs of 2, 14 and 26 yards, and completed seven of 16 passes for 100 yards.
Ricky Merritt added 65 yards on 14 carries for the Pelicans. Larohn Cambre finished with 130 yards on 10 carries, including a 73-yard touchdown for St. James (0-6, 0-1).
LUTCHER 56, ISTROUMA 6: In Lutcher, Ruston Matherne ran for two touchdowns and passed for three more, while Daniel Taylor ran for 117 yards on just five carries with a touchdown to pace fourth-ranked Lutcher (5-1, 3-0) in its latest District 6-4A win.
The Bulldogs roared out to a 35-6 first-quarter lead and never looked back. Matherne completed seven of 12 passes for 86 yards, including scoring tosses of 37 yards to Taylor, 12 yards to Jared Poche and 12 yards to Sully Martin. He scored on runs of 8 and 4 yards.
Ron Clark led Istrouma (0-6, 0-3) with 62 yards on 14 carries. Trevon Holmes returned a fumble 57 yards for Istrouma’s lone score.
SOUTHERN LAB 15, ARCHBISHOP HANNAN 7: In Covington, Southern Lab (4-2, 1-0) scored all the points its needed in the second quarter of a District 7-1A opener.
Maurice Aucoin scored on a 12-yard run, while Deonte Shorts threw a 67-yard scoring pass to Juan Smith for the Kittens.
Previously unbeaten Hannan got its only points on a 12-yard interception return by Bruce DiMartino. The SLHS defense held its ground, despite 248 passing yards by Hannan (5-1, 0-1).
CENTRAL CATHOLIC 40, FISHER 0: In Lafitte, Josh Singleton threw for five touchdowns to pace Central Catholic-Morgan City.
Singleton had a 93-yard scoring pass to Lloyd Grogan. Tyler Hoffpauir and Dontrell Brown each caught two touchdown passes for CCMC (6-1).
CHRISTIAN LIFE 49, MOUNT HERMON 21: Big plays were the order of the day as Christian Life (4-2, 1-0) won its District 7-1A opener.
Dwayne Carral started the scoring with an 80-yard kickoff return for a touchdown. Trevon Fisher had touchdown passes of 35 yards and 80 yards to Frank Bartley. Jerrell Richardson had scoring runs of 36, 2 and 20 yards for the Crusaders.
