Powered by a career-high 23 points from Caroline Gonzalez, the Loyola women’s basketball team defeated Martin Methodist 69-59 to claim its second straight Southern States Athletic Conference tournament title Saturday in Montgomery, Alabama.

Next up for Loyola is the NAIA Division I tournament in Independence, Missouri. The Wolf Pack will find out its opponent Wednesday when the 32-team field is announced. Loyola fell in the first round of last year’s tournament, dropping a 73-54 decision to the University of Great Falls.

Gonzalez led all scorers with a career-high 23 points on 7-of-11 shooting. Kylah Jones poured in 14 points, while Meghan Temple grabbed a game-high nine boards.

After averaging 14 points and 5.6 rebounds, Gonzalez was named tournament MVP.

Martin Methodist featured three scorers in double figures, led by Abby Clayton’s 14 points on 5-of-10 shooting.

The Wolf Pack shot 22-of-61 (36 percent) from the floor and 11-of-25 (44 percent) from beyond the arc, led by Gonzalez’s six triples.

Loyola’s bench continued to shine, outscoring the Redhawks 36-17.
