Noel to be instructor for Golf Channel Academy

ORLANDO, Fla. — Longtime Louisiana golf professional Rob Noel has been named one of the inaugural instructors for the newly formed Golf Channel Academy.

Noel, who operates the Rob Noel Golf Academy in Abita Springs and the Big Easy Golf Academy in Jefferson, will be one of 25 coaches who will be part of the Golf Channel Academy Network when it launches in April.

The Golf Channel Academy is designed to help golf teaching professionals learn from each other about instructional and business practices.

“I think it’s going to propel coaches and coaching forward in a big way,” Noel said.

Noel has been named “Best Teacher” in Louisiana four times by Golf Digest and was named among Golf Magazine’s top 100 instructors for 2015-16. He is also a five-time recipient of the Gulf States Section PGA Teacher of the Year Award.

Unsung Cowboy

Pugh dead at 70

IRVING, Texas — Jethro Pugh, an unsung member of the “Doomsday Defense” that helped the Dallas Cowboys win two Super Bowls in the 1970s, died. He was 70.

The team said Pugh died of natural causes Wednesday, four days before the Cowboys were to play their first postseason game in Green Bay since the famous Ice Bowl in 1967.

The longtime defensive tackle played alongside Hall of Famer Bob Lilly in that 21-17 Dallas loss that sent the Packers to the Super Bowl.

Pugh was the first Dallas player to lead the team in sacks five straight seasons (1968-72). DeMarcus Ware, the franchise sacks leader, was the only other to do it. Pugh is fifth on the team’s career list with 991/2 sacks.
