The first two weeks of the high school football season have featured plenty of surprises.

The notion traditional powers like Catholic High and Parkview Baptist would be 0-2 seemed unlikely. But it’s true.

Lesser heralded teams like Scotlandville, McKinley and Brusly are off to 2-0 starts. But this wild ride is far from over.

Week 3 brings its own share of intriguing matchups as Baton Rouge metro area teams edge closer to district play. All games start at 7 p.m.

Two notable Thursday games include Class 4A Broadmoor (1-1) at 5A Live Oak (1-1) and 1A Opelousas Catholic (1-1) vs. 10th-ranked St. John-Plaquemine (1-1), also of 1A.

The list of Friday games for teams in Class 5A and 4A is led by Catholic (0-2) at Denham Springs (2-0).

The two long-time rivals are no longer in the same district. The Yellow Jackets, who rolled up more than 500 yards in a 50-39 win over Woodlawn in Week 2, seek their first win over Catholic since 2008.

“Catholic is one of the top programs in this area year in and year out and they’ve played a tough schedule,” DSHS coach Dru Nettles said. “They’re going to be looking to get back on track, and I’m sure they’re going to come at us with everything they have. It should be a great game.”

Though top-ranked White Castle (1-1) lost to No. 9 Central Catholic in a notable Class 1A game last Friday, the Bulldogs find themselves in the key matchup for Classes 3A and below.

WCHS comes to Baton Rouge to take on fourth-ranked University (2-0), of Class 2A.

“That loss doesn’t change my opinion of White Castle. Central Catholic is also a championship caliber team,” UHS coach Chad Mahaffey said. “White Castle’s running back (Tyre Bracken) may be the best player we’ll see all year. It’ll be our first home game, so we’re expecting a great atmosphere.”

The other 5A-4A games represent varying degrees of difficulty. Second-ranked Dutchtown (2-0) travels to Sulphur (1-1) for a nondistrict 5A game. Zachary (2-0), hosts No. 8 East Feliciana (2-0), of 3A. Central (1-1) hosts Woodlawn (1-1) in a nondistrict matchup of 5A teams.

Class 5A Scotlandville (2-0) looks to keep its record perfect, hosting 4A Belaire (0-2). East Ascension (2-0) hosts Walker (0-2) for a nondistrict 5A game. McKinley (2-0), of 5A, goes to Lafayette to take on 4A Northside (0-2). St. Michael (2-0) goes to Hammond to take on 2A St. Thomas Aquinas (1-1).

Another unbeaten team in Class 3A and below takes on a 4A team when 1A Southern Lab (2-0) plays at 4A Istrouma (0-2).

Also in 3A and below, traditional rivals meet under unusual circumstances as fourth-ranked Parkview (0-2), of 3A, takes on 2A Redemptorist (0-2). Until this season, the two teams were in the same 3A district.

Also in 3A, West Feliciana (2-0) travels to No. 7 Independence (1-1). Class 3A Brusly (2-0) heads to No. 7 Riverside Academy (1-1), of 2A. Episcopal, rated 10th in 2A, travels to Metairie to take on Class 1A Country Day (1-1).
