ZACHARY — Pineville’s Chuck Spears is 18 holes away from winning the 2011 Louisiana Golf Association Junior Amateur Championship.
Spears shot a 1-under 71 during Thursday’s second round, and he stands at 6 under with 18 holes left to play. He holds a one-stroke lead over Kenner’s Taylor Billings.
The two men were paired in the final group Thursday and traded the lead for much of the round. Billings took a two-shot lead after the first none holes of the 6,750-yard course, but Spears birdied three straight holes on the back nine, helping him pull ahead by one stroke at the end of the day.
Ross Davis of Baton Rouge is eighth, seven shots off the pace, at 1 over.
Friday’s final round will begin at 7:30 a.m. Spears, Billings and Caldwell are scheduled to tee off at 9:09 a.m.
