WARNER, Okla. — Cameron Hoffman, who was hitless in his first four at-bats, doubled on his fifth appearance, scoring Brady Williamson from second base to lift top-ranked Delgado over Maple Woods 2-1 in 10 innings at the NJCAA South Central District tournament at Biff Thompson Field on Friday.

The Dolphins (47-9) next will face No. 5-ranked Connors State (49-9) at 7 p.m. Friday.

Williamson opened the 10th inning with a double to left field, his second hit of the game. Following an infield out by Patrick Riley, Hoffman laced a double to the right center field fence.

“Coach (Joe Scheuermann) told me I was trying to do too much earlier in the game,” said Hoffman. “He told me to just relax. I was trying to drive the ball to center field, and he hung a curve ball and I was able to hit it.”

Hoffman’s RBI came off the Monarchs’ third of four pitchers to appear in the game, John Osborne (0-2).

Unable to push across runs in the second and third and leaving seven base runners stranded through six innings, the Dolphins finally scored in the seventh. Delgado left the bases loaded in the third, despite getting two hits.

“We had numerous chances early in the game, but couldn’t get a two-out hit with runners on,” said Scheuermann. “We finally put together a big inning in the 10th by putting a couple of hits together for the first time all day.

“This was typical for us. We play a lot of cardiac games. Our pitching allows us to do that.

“We always seem to be close and that kind of game. This takes a little pressure off of us now, because we now know we are going to be here on Saturday. We’ll wait for Saturday and go from there.”

The Dolphins used three pitchers, with Brandt Bourgeois (4-0) getting the victory.

In the seventh, Jordan Caillouet greeted Maple Woods starter Matt Russell with a double off the wall in left center field. It was the last batter for Russell, who was relieved by Brendan Feldmann. Russell went six innings, striking out six, walking three and scattering six hits.

Feldmann then committed an error on a bunt attempt by Cody Farrell, allowing Caillouet to reach third base.

Then on Logan Jones’ infield ground ball the Monarchs attempted a double play. Jones beat the throw to first as Farrell was forced out at second, which allowed Jones to score, giving the Dolphins a 1-0 lead.

The Dolphins’ lead was short-lived, however, as the Monarchs answered with a run in their half of the seventh.

Will Carter singled off Dophins starter Christian Trent, whose wild pitch allowed Carter to get to second base. Trent Hill then singled to left field, and the ball was misplayed by Jones, which allowed Carter to score the tying run.
