Third-seeded Louisiana-Monroe breezed past South Alabama and into the Sun Belt tournament semifinals with a dominant 77-59 win on Friday night.

The Warhawks will face No. 2 seed Georgia Southern at 3:30 p.m. in Saturday’s semifinals. The Warhawks’ win meant the tournament’s four highest seeds advanced to the semis.

The Warhawks trailed for just 28 seconds midway through the first half and put the game away by closing the first half on a 16-4 run.

Known mostly for their stifling defense, the Warhawks put on a good show offensively against South Alabam. The 77 points scored by ULM matched a season high in conference play. Several players turned in solid individual efforts.

ULM point guard Nick Coppola pushed the Warhawks to an early 10-point advantage by knocking down four 3s in the first 8 minutes and change.

Coppola didn’t hit another 3-pointer, but the Warhawks hit three 3s during their 16-4 run to close the first half, and Coppola assisted all of them.

Majok Deng (12 points, 14 rebounds) and DeMondre Harvey (11 points, 10 rebounds) turned in double doubles for the Warhawks, while Taylor Ongwae celebrated receiving his first team all-conference award by scoring a game-high 17 points.

Dionte Ferguson scored 16 points and pulled down seven rebounds for the Jaguars.
