Louisiana-Lafayette scored six runs in the first inning, highlighted by Sara Corbello’s first career grand slam, en route to a 7-5 victory and a three-game sweep of FIU in Sun Belt Conference softball action Saturday at Lamson Park.

The Ragin’ Cajuns improved to 22-11 and 5-4 in Sun Belt play.

“I like the way we fought,” coach Michael Lotief said. “It’s important that we win these battles. When you start to win these battles, you will win the bigger ones, too. It is important that we learn to close a team out. They kept punching, fighting, and they weren’t going to go away.”

With ULL already ahead 2-0 in the first, Corbello came to bat with the bases loaded and sent a blast over the wall in left-center field, increasing the Cajuns’ lead to 6-0.

“(Friday), they were throwing in, and I didn’t expect it to happen again today.” Corbello said. “That is what I’ve been working on all week. I just wanted a line-drive base hit.”

Sarah Draheim picked up two RBIs, as well. She drove in Brianna Cherry with a double in the first inning to initiate the scoring, then finished 2-for-4 with two runs and two RBIs.

“They came out with a good mindset,” Lotief said. “It doesn’t matter when you score; it’s all about competing in every at bat.”

Jordan Wallace (13-6) tossed her 14th complete game of the season, allowing three earned runs on six hits and five walks, while striking out five.

FIU got a big day at the plate from Jessy Alfonso, who went 2-for-with two home runs and three RBIs. Her homers came in the fourth and sixth innings, the only two innings the Panthers scored.

The Cajuns will start their six-game road trip with a doubleheader at Oklahoma at 5 p.m. Wednesday.
