Louisiana native Michael Beychok, the winner of last year’s National Handicapping Championship in Las Vegas, has joined The Advocate, where he will dish out his top picks for this season’s races at the Fair Grounds.
Beychok, 50, will also write occasional columns on horse racing and share his insight on other big races, including the Triple Crown.
“I’m excited to share my experience and passion for horse racing with The Advocate’s readers,” he said. “I look forward to helping people pick a few winners this year at the Fair Grounds.”
Beychok has seen more than 100,000 races and has handicapped horses for more than 35 years.
He was a teenager when James Carville, then an associate in his father’s law firm, introduced him to the Fair Grounds.
Beychok is founder and chief handicapper for Beychokracing.com, a website dedicated to horse race handicapping and education, and a cast member on the upcoming Esquire Network TV reality show “Horseplayers.”
Beychok earned the title handicapper of the year, as well as the prestigious Eclipse award, by claiming first place in the annual National Handicapping Championship, which came with a $1 million prize. Beychok won the championship in the closest finish in the event’s history.
He is the senior partner in Ourso Beychok, Inc., a national political consulting and advertising firm based in Baton Rouge.
