THIBODAUX — The Nicholls State baseball team earned a 1-0 win in a nonconference matchup against Lamar on Tuesday night.
The Colonels (11-7-1) were locked in a defensive battle with the Cardinals (7-12) throughout the night, and Nicholls’ lone run in the fourth inning proved to be the difference in the opener of the two-game series.
Marc Frazier notched a single up the middle and came home when Kyle Reese crushed a deep shot to left-center. Both squads went scoreless the rest of the way.
Right-hander Ryan Deemes (3-0) earned the win, tossing seven scoreless innings with six hits and six strikeouts. Robbie Petty and Stuart Holmes were dominant in relief, fanning five batters over the final two frames.
Jayson McKinley (0-1) took the loss for Lamar, surrendering four hits through four innings.
BRCC 16, COPIAH-LINCOLN 6: In Wesson, Mississippi, Nick Ber went 3-for-5 with two home runs and six RBIs as BRCC erupted early for an easy win over Co-Lin.
Layton Laird also went 3-for-5 for the Bears (17-16-1), who scored four times in the top of the first and had a 10-1 lead after four innings.
Mark Traylor was 2-for-3 with a double, home run, four RBIs and four runs scored. Ridge Goodwin was 2-for-4 with a homer and two RBIs.
Blake Hymel (2-2) picked up the win, allowing two runs on three hits in 4.1 innings. He struck out five.
BRCC hosts No. 2-ranked Hinds (Mississippi) Community College in a doubleheader at 1 p.m. Saturday.
