Heading into Saturday’s contest against Southern Miss, the Bulldogs are coming off consecutive victories against UTEP and UTSA, outscoring their two conference opponents 82-23. ... The Bulldogs have played efficiently on defense, ranking No. 3 in the conference in both passing and rushing defense. ... NOTES: ULM’s mantra remains the same — defense, defense and more defense. Two weeks ago, the Warhawks allowed a mere 352 yards to Kentucky, surrendering only 5.25 yards per play. ... On Saturday, ULM will face the Sun Belt’s No. 3 total offense in Texas State. The Bobcasts average 459.8 yards per game, including a potent rushing attack that has rumbled for 232.2 yards per contest.

NOTES: It appears to be the Daniel Sams show in Lake Charles. Last week against Abilene Christian the junior quarterback c completed 10 of 16 passes for 184 yards and three touchdowns with one interception. Sams also rushed for 112 yards on 13 carries.

NOTES: Northwestern State enters Week 9 after an impressive 31-27 win over Sam Houston State and will be looking to down a Central Arkansas squad which has won three of its past four contests. The two squads are fairly evenly matched in the conference — the Bears and Demons rank No. 6 and No. 8, respectively, in total offense while sitting at No. 7 and No. 8 in total defense.

STAT THAT MATTERS: Nicholls State has been outscored 423-98 through eight games in 2014.

NOTES: The Colonels were routed again last Saturday 63-21 against Lamar, and remain winless through eight games. Name a statistic and odds are Nicholls State is near the bottom of the SLC rankings. Nicholls ranks No. 10 in total offense (254.2 yards per contest) and last in total defense (561.6 yards). ... Fortunately for the Colonels, their next two opponents, Houston Baptist and Incarnate Word, are a combined 2-12 this season.
