MINDEN — Gauthier & Amedee scored seven third-inning runs Friday for a big early lead, but the Gonzales-based club couldn’t hang on to beat Columbia, Tenn., in a wild 10-inning affair at the American Legion Mid-South Regional Tournament.
After scoring 14 runs in the sixth, seventh, eighth and ninth innings, Columbia scored once in the 10th for a 15-14 win.
“We’re at a point in the season where all the teams can really swing it one through nine,” G&A coach Justin Morgan said. “You can never really sit on a lead. (Columbia) did a good job of keeping us in check and battled back. Both teams competed. We came up on the short end.”
G&A, which beat Emporia, Kan., in its opening game at the tournament, will face Ada, Okla., at 1 p.m. Saturday in an elimination game. Ada beat Festus, Mo., 11-6 on Friday after losing to host Minden 26-16 in its opener.
G&A led 7-0 after the seven-run third, but Columbia scored seven in the sixth to tie it up. G&A then built an 11-8 lead thanks to five runs in the seventh.
The teams combined for six runs in the ninth, leading to extra innings.
Columbia got the winning run against G&A reliever Jesse Burratt, who pitched the final two innings.
For the G&A offense, Daniel St. Pierre went 3-for-5, Jack Cockrum went 3-for-5 with two RBIs, Tanner Sheets went 2-for-5 with a homer and Jacob Williams went 2-for-2 with a double and two RBIs.
