McNeese State (3-1, 1-0 SLC) at Sam Houston (2-3, 1-0)

WHEN: 3 p.m. Saturday

WHERE: Bowers Stadium (12,975), Huntsville, Texas

TV: WBTR.

SERIES: McNeese leads 25-9-1

STAT THAT MATTERS: McNeese totaled 23 sacks through 13 games last season. Through four contests in 2014, the Cowboys have already 13, including six against Nicholls State.

NOTES: It’s safe to say Saturday’s contest between McNeese State and Sam Houston State is an important one. In five of the past eight seasons, the team that emerged victorious proceeded to at least win a share of the Southland Conference title. Matt Viator’s Cowboys rolled to a 45-3 victory against Nicholls last Saturday thanks to a 325 yards on the ground and another 242 (with three touchdowns) through the air.

S.F. Austin (3-2, 0-1 SLC)

at Nicholls State (0-6, 0-2)

WHEN: 6 p.m. Saturday

WHERE: Guidry Stadium (10,500), Thibodaux

TV: none

SERIES: Stephen F. Austin leads 23-7

STAT THAT MATTERS: The Colonels have averaged 9.5 points per game and allowed 53 points per contest.

NOTES: Through six games in 2014, Nicholls State has only managed to score 10 points or more on three occasions, with its highest scoring output being 18 two weeks ago against Central Arkansas. Colonels senior quarterback Kalen Henderson continues to struggle, completing only 48.8 percent of his pass attempts for 605 yards, one touchdown and three interceptions. Considering the Lumberjacks have taken six-straight contests in the all-time series, it should be another rough week for Colonels fans.

Incarnate Word (1-5, 1-2 SLC) at NW State (2-3, 0-1)

WHEN: 6 p.m. Saturday

WHERE: Turpin Stadium (15,971), Natchitoches

INTERNET: ESPN3

SERIES: First meeting

STAT THAT MATTERS: The Demons rank No. 4 in turnovers gained in the FCS this season with 15.

NOTES: It’s been more than a month since Northwestern State played at home. Forty-three days, to be exact. The fact Saturday night is the Demons’ homecoming contest almost seems too perfect. Last weekend at Southeastern Louisiana, Northwestern State fell to the Lions 30-22 in a contest where senior quarterback Zach Adkins struggled mightily. Adkins completed 25-of-43 pass attempts for 217 yards, one touchdown and four interceptions.

Southeastern (4-2, 2-0 SLC) at Lamar (4-2, 1-1)

WHEN: 6 p.m. Saturday

WHERE: Provost Umphrey Stadium (16,000), Beaumont, Texas

TV: None

SERIES: SLU leads 6-3

STAT THAT MATTERS: Southeastern’s offense is averaging 424.3 yards and 36.8 points per game.

NOTES: After blowing out Incarnate Word two weeks ago, SLU pulled out a 30-22 win against Northwestern State last Saturday. Lions senior quarterback Bryan Bennett had an unusually poor outing against the Demons, completing 10-of-21 passes for a 103 yards and a touchdown. The Lions received help from the defense and special teams units as senior linebacker Isiah Corbett returned a 44-yard interception for a score and senior kicker Ryan Adams booted three field goals.

Alcorn St. (5-1, 3-0 SWAC) at Grambling (3-3, 3-0)

WHEN: 2 p.m. Saturday

WHERE: Eddie Robinson Stadium (19,600), Grambling

TV: None

STAT THAT MATTERS: Grambling had two interceptions against Alabama A&M in a 38-28 victory.

NOTES: It will be a sweet return home for the Tigers this weekend. For the first time in the 2014 campaign, Grambling will play at home, where the Tigers are riding a three-game winnstreak (all against SWAC opponents). Last week, junior quarterback Johnathan Williams completed 23-of-37 pass attempts for 291 yards, two touchdowns and an interception.
