LAFAYETTE - The University of Louisiana at Lafayette Athletics Department and Cox Communications jointly announced the start of the Ragin’ Cajuns TV Network at a news conference Thursday.

Cox cable channel 4 will be the flagship channel for RCN, which will air three ULL football games and a men’s basketball game live in 17 Louisiana parishes this season.

The channel reaches more than 500,000 households. In addition, the games will be replayed on Cox Sports Television (CST), a network that reaches more than two million homes in Louisiana, Texas, Arkansas, Georgia, Florida, Mississippi, Oklahoma and Virginia.

Three home football games will air on the Cajuns’ network, including the first home game of the coach Mark Hudspeth era against Nicholls State on Sept. 17. The game has a 6 p.m. kickoff. Other games are against Florida Atlantic (6 p.m. Oct. 1) and North Texas (4 p.m. Oct. 15, homecoming).

The RCN contests increase to six the number of ULL football games set for live telecasts this season. The others include the opener on Fox College Sports at Oklahoma State on Sept. 3 and two Sun Belt Network games: Oct. 29 at Middle Tennessee and Nov. 5 at home against University of Louisiana at Monroe.

McNeese State

MICHEL PLEASED WITH DL COMPETITON: McNeese State defensive line coach Manny Michel is seeing more competition from his players as August workouts go on, and that’s been a good thing for him and for them.

“Competition is a great adversary for you for your football team,” Michel said. “Those guys are really working hard and because of the competition, if they don’t work they’re not going to start. It’s that simple.”

Desmund Lighten, a two-time first team all-conference pick at tackle, has moved to end while Pat Williams, from Plaquemine, saw some starting time at tackle a year ago.

Michael Ware has seen action at tackle as has Justin Breaux and Chris Loveless (sophomore from Houston) lettered at end last year.

Kevin Dorn and Everett Ellefsen, the former lining up at tackle and the latter at end, are both redshirt freshmen.
