KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — Knoxville scored twice in the first period and held off the Louisiana IceGators from there for a 3-0 victory Friday night in Game 1 of the teams’ best-of-three SPHL quarterfinal playoff series in the Knoxville Civic Coliseum.
Berkley Scott and Vince Perreault scored in the opening period for the Ice Bears, who capped the scoring on Peter Neal’s tally in the second. Goalie Bryan Hince stopped all 28 shots the IceGators threw at him.
Kiefer Smiley made 17 saves for the IceGators.
The teams meet again at 6:35 p.m. Saturday in Knoxville. If the IceGators prevail to force a decisive third game, that would be played at 4 p.m. Sunday in Knoxville.
“I believe and I know we have the character and leadership to get this done,” IceGators coach Kevin Kaminski said.
