HUNTSVILLE, Texas — Jared Johnson ran for two touchdowns and threw for two more to lead Sam Houston State to a 38-22 upset victory over McNeese State on Saturday.

Sam Houston (3-3, 2-0 Southland Conference) jumped out to an early 14-0 lead and held on to knock off the Cowboys (3-2, 1-1) who were ranked No. 4 in the FCS national polls. SHSU was unranked.

Johnson, who rushed for 190 yards on 11 carries and threw for 192 yards, accounted for all but 104 of SHSU’s 486 total yards.

The Bearkats led 21-7 at the half following Johnson’s 73-yard scoring sprint with 2:14 remaining in the second quarter. Johnson passed to Yedidiah Louis for a 22-yard score to start the third and ran 67 yards for another score and a commanding 35-7 lead.

GRAMBLING 28, ALCORN ST. 21: In Grambling, Johnathan Williams had three total touchdowns and Grambling State survived Alcorn State’s fourth-quarter rally.

In a matchup of Southwestern Athletic Conference division leaders, Grambling (4-3, 4-0) also became the lone undefeated team in conference play by knocking off Alcorn State (5-2, 3-1).

Williams opened the scoring with a 2-yard touchdown run and extended the lead to 21-0 on a 26-yard touchdown pass to Ka’Jandre Domino. Williams added his second touchdown run early in the third quarter to make it 28-7 before Alcorn State rallied with a pair of fourth-quarter touchdowns.

Grambling sealed the victory on the final play, stopping the Braves’ hook-and-lateral play near the 20.
