Arizona Cardinals safety Tyrann Mathieu was named the NFL’s defensive rookie of the month for October, during which he had 21 tackles, an interception, a sack and five passes defensed.
The third-round draft pick and former Heisman Trophy finalist from LSU had an interception last week in Arizona’s 27-13 victory over the Atlanta Falcons.
“It felt great,” Mathieu told the Cardinals’ website. “Obviously I’ve been hungry. Since the third week, I haven’t touched the ball. It felt good to get my hands on one.”
Mathieu’s first sack of his career came Oct. 6 when he took down Carolina’s Cam Newton.
Mathieu is one of just six players in the NFL with at least two interceptions, a sack, and a forced fumble this season.
