THIBODAUX (AP) — The Nicholls State women's basketball team has been ordered to forfeit its Jan. 7 victory over Texas-Arlington.
The league's compliance committee ordered the forfeiture of Nicholls' 78-59 win after the institution discovered an ineligible athlete participated in the game.
The Courier (http://bit.ly/xTkew7 ) reports the committee ruled that the athlete made a noticeable contribution to the win so the game should be forfeited. After an appeal by the institution, the Southland's Advisory Council upheld the decision. Both administrative groups agreed that the institution had no reason to know of the student-athlete's ineligibility and made the required effort to accurately determine such.
Heading into Wednesday's conference games, Nicholls' is 13-12 (6-6 in Southland games), and UTA's mark is 6-18 overall (4-8).
