Ursuline is a step closer to a state title as the Lions swept Iota 25-18, 25-13, 25-11 in a Division III quarterfinal match Thursday.

“Well, we’ve got experience across the board with our sophomores last year that are now juniors,” Ursuline coach Jay Jay Juan said. “They’re picking up.”

Juan said it was important for his four freshmen to get experience in the state tournament.

With the win the Lions will play E.D. White, a 25-9, 13-25, 25-10, 25-21 winner over Iota. Michelle Riviere led E.D. White with 14 kills while Whitney Sternfels had 13.

Parkview Baptist defeated Rayne 25-17, 25-15, 25-17 and the Eagles will face Teurlings Catholic in a semifinal Friday.

“We’ve done a great job with our team, senior leadership,” said Parkview coach Becky Madden. “They work together. We’re a balanced team.”

It won’t be the first time Parkview Baptist has played Teurlings Catholic.

“We actually had a chance to play Teurlings earlier in the season,” Madden said. “It was at a tournament. We went three games, three sets. It was a close three games. We lost. So it’s hard to beat somebody twice.”

Teurlings Catholic is one game closer to winning a second consecutive state title and after taking a 2-0 lead on De La Salle, the Rebels swept the Cavaliers 25-20, 25-14, 25-19.

“They’re a good team,” Teurlings coach Terry Hebert said. “I think they sensed that if they didn’t do it then, it would be tough for them to pull it out. They gained some momentum. We did a good job of settling in.”
