The Buzz: Northshore trailed 49-0 at the half last week. Fontainebleau trailed 20-0 at halftime, but avoided a shutout thanks to Mason Blocker’s 30-yard touchdown pass to Hunter Bastion in the fourth quarter.

The Buzz: Hammonds QBs combined to go 8 of 20 for 59 yards with two interceptions last week. The Tors rushed for 177 yards. Slidell QB Wayne Griffin was 9 of 16 for 153 yards last week.

The Buzz: Ponchatoula is ranked No. 4 in Class 5A. Covington RB Devin Brumfield had 16 carries for 143 yards and three touchdowns last week, including an 82-yard run.

The Buzz: St. Paul’s is unranked in the Class 5A poll, but is ranked No. 7 in The Advocate’s Large Schools Super 10. St. Paul’s QB Kenny Sears did not start, but passed for 242 yards and three touchdowns last week. Mandeville RB Parker Orgeron ran for four touchdowns.

The Buzz: Hahnville dropped out of the Class 5A poll, but is still ranked No. 10 in The Advocate’s Large Schools Super 10. Hahnville has lost three of its last four games, but all three of those victors are undefeated. Both teams have lost their starting QBs this season. Hahnville’s Mike Neal suffered a broken collarbone in Week 3. Terrebonne lost starter Brett Bergeron to a broken arm last week.

Last week: East St. John beat Central Lafourche 21-18 in OT; H.L. Bourgeois lost to Thibodaux 41-23.

The Buzz: East St. John QB Xavier Lewis (LSU commitment) scored the Wildcats’ winning touchdown in overtime last week. H.L. Bourgeois’ Ritney Coleman had a 90-yard kickoff return for a touchdown last week.

Last week: Central Lafourche lost to East St. John 21-18 in overtime. South Lafourche beat Terrebonne 29-14.
Last year: South Lafourche won 35-14.
The Buzz: Central Lafourche kicker Logan Maronge’s 32-yard field goal tied the game at 15-15 to send last week’s game into overtime. He also kicked a field goal in overtime. South Lafourche RB Harvey Allen has scored nine touchdowns.

The Buzz: This is the district opener for both teams. Salmen avoided a shutout when Doug Marquez returned an interception 39 yards for a touchdown in the fourth quarter. Wallace Duplessis added an 8-yard touchdown run.

Last week: Ascension Christian lost to Ascension Episcopal 63-0.
Last year: West St. John won 62-0.
The Buzz: This is the district opener for both teams. West St. John is ranked No. 7 in Class 1A and No. 6 in The Advocate’s Small Schools Super 10. Ascension Christian has been outscored 117-0 in the past two weeks.
Ridgewood (0-4, 0-1) vs. Ecole Classique (0-3, 0-3)

The Buzz: District 8-4A opener. Riverdale is led by speedy Donte Jackson and Darius Bovie. Bovie has rushed for 705 yards and nine TDs this season and Jackson can take it the distance any time. Morris Sarah rushed for 60 yards last week for the Warriors. DB Deshawn Raymond leads the defense.
Cox (1-4, 0-0)
vs. Higgins (1-4, 0-0)
Last week: Cox lost to Karr 52-34; Higgins beat Riverdale 56-52.
Last year: Cox won 27-26.
The Buzz: District 8-5A opener. Versatile QB Dion Ray, a UL-Lafayette commit, sparks the Cougars. Ray has thrown for 977 yards and rushed for another 210 yards. His favorite targets are Malik Taylor (16 catches, 313 yards) and Jacob Riley (16-267). The Hurricanes gave Craig Laborde his first win last week. Higgins QB Daniel White finished 22-of-42 for 267 yards and accounted for three TDs. Davion Sullivan scored the game-winner and then sealed it with an interception.
Holy Cross (4-1, 0-0)

Last week: Holy Cross beat Bonnabel 27-7; Jesuit beat East Jefferson 40-14.

The Buzz: Rivals meet for the 95th time in the Catholic League opener for both teams. Jesuit leads the series 54-38-1 and had won the past five meetings before last season. Tigers are led by QB Kyle Schexnayder (595 passing yards, 325 rushing), RB Tre Turner (444 rushing) and WR Michael Chigbu, a Georgia commit. Blue Jays counter with QB Trey LaForge, who has completed 73 of 113 passes for 1,003 yards and 15 TDs. LaForge’s big-play receiver is Kalija Lipscomb (28 catches, 463 yards). Jesuit is ranked No. 3 in The New Orleans Advocate Large School Super 10 and No. 6 in the LSWA 5A rankings.

Eagles are led by gunslinging QB Deshawn Capers-Smith, who has completed 83 of 138 passes for 1,703 yards and 19 TDs this season. WR Tyron Johnson is considered the nation’s top player at his position by some and has hauled in 38 passes for 770 yards and eight TDs. Clyde Chriss is nearly as potent, with 530 receiving yards. The Cardinals counter with running QB Andrew Hicks, who has an area-best 1,013 rushing yards already this season. Cards coming off rare shutout in homecoming win.
Landry-Walker (4-1, 0-0)

Last week: Landry-Walker beat McKinley 21-20; Karr beat Higgins 52-34.
Last year: Karr won 26-22 in the regular season and 29-0 in the playoffs.
The Buzz: District 9-4A opener is also for bragging rights in Algiers. Karr was only team to beat Landry-Walker in 2013. The Charging Bucs are platooning QBs Li’Jon Cordier and Keytaon Thompson, who have combined for 1,316 yards and 14 TDs this season. Tevin Bush has rushed for seven TDs. Karr defense is led by LSU commit Isaiah Washington. QB Aldon Clark has thrown for 797 yards and seven TDs.

Patriots are ranked No. 1 in The Advocate’s Small School Super 10 and No. 2 in 3A. Nathaniel Evans’ 49 tackles leads the defense, while the offense is headed up by RBs Devon Benn (643 yards), Dontae Jones (474 yards) and QB Myles Washington (346). St. Charles’ rushing attack is led by Erron Lewis. Comets have outscored their past two opponents 98-6.

The Cavaliers haven’t allowed a touchdown in two weeks and have allowed just 45 points all season. Cole Lewis (53 carries, 643 yards) leads the ground attack. The Mustangs counter with QB Darnell Williams, who has thrown for 1,054 yards and 12 TDs already this season.

Last week: Hannan beat Pope John Paul II 17-14; St. Thomas Aquinas beat Pine 42-36.

The Buzz: Hannan snapped a five-game losing streak last week dating back to Division III championship game in 2013. STA averaging 46 points in its last three games, including a season-high 49 against Pope John Paul II. STA looking to go 3-0 in district play, while Hannan aiming for a 2-1 mark.
Northlake Christian (5-0, 1-0)
at St. Helena Central (0-5, 0-1)
Last week: Northlake Christian beat Capitol 19-7; St. Helena lost to Springfield 17-12.
Last year: Northlake Christian won 20-6.
The Buzz: The Wolverines, 1-0 in district play, have won 16 consecutive-regular season games dating to the 2012 season. Miguel Black leads the way with 746 yards and 10 TDs. Points have been hard to come by for St. Helena, which has scored just 42 points through five games.
Pine (3-2, 1-1)
at Pope John Paul II (1-4, 0-2)
Last week: Pine lost to St. Thomas Aquinas 42-36; Pope John Paul lost to Hannan 17-14.
Last year: Pope John Paul II won 52-44.
The Buzz: PJP is looking for its first district win after getting off to an 0-2 start. Lone win this season came via forfeit against Pearl River. Pine is 1-1 in district play. Derrick Dillon, who has committed to Florida, leads Pine. Dillon has rushed for 765 yards and eight touchdowns.
Fisher (0-5, 0-2)
at Riverside (5-0, 2-0)
Last week: Fisher lost to St. James 63-6; Riverside beat Cohen 68-8.
Last year: Riverside won 63-0.
The Buzz: The Rebels are looking to go 3-0 in district play heading into an Oct. 17 showdown against Newman. Riverside is ranked No. 3 in The Advocate’s Small School Super 10 and No. 3 in 2A. Von Julien’s 423 receiving yards and 7 TDs leads a high-octane offense averaging 45.8 points per game. Fisher, meanwhile, hasn’t scored that many points all season. Gators have scored 38 points in four games.
Newman (5-0, 2-0)
at St. James (2-3, 1-1)
Last week: Newman beat Carver 53-12; St. James beat Fisher 63-6.
Last year: Newman won 44-14.
The Buzz: Newman is 2-0 in district, with huge game against Riverside looming. Nebraska commit Kendall Bussey has rushed for 715 yards an area-best 17 TDs (19 total TDs). Jay Tyler, now playing WR, became the school’s all-time leading TD leader with 110 last week. Myles Lapeyre has been stellar at QB, completing 33 off 44 passes for 480 yards and eight TDs. Lowell Narcisse (1,361 passing yards and 12 TDs and 590 rushing yards, 7 TDs) is one of area’s top dual-threat QBs.
Cohen (0-5, 0-2) vs. Sophie B. Wright (2-3, 1-1), Pan Am
Last week: Cohen lost to Riverside 68-8; Sophie Wright beat South Plaquemines 22-20.
Last year: Sophie Wright won 64-6.
The Buzz: The Warriors snapped a three-game losing skid last week, winning their first game since season opener against East Iberville. Cohen has scored just 16 points all season and has been shutout in three of its five games. Green Hornets are giving up 61.2 points per game.
So. Plaquemines (1-4, 1-1) vs. Carver (2-3, 1-1)
Last week: South Plaquemines lost to Sophie Wright 22-20; Carver lost to Newman 53-12.
Last year: South Plaquemines won 24-18.
The Buzz: Winner of this one moves to 2-1 in district play. The Hurricanes’ lone win this season came against Cohen. The Rams, who playing with no senior class this year, is led by QB Quinton Matthews (827 passing yards, 7 TDs).
