St. Amant pitcher Blayne Enlow is an LSU commitment and is already established as one of the area’s top pitchers.

This week the senior-to-be gets to take his skills to a higher level. Enlow is one of three Louisiana players set to compete in the USA Baseball 18U Tournament of Stars in Cary, North Carolina.

“We found out about this a few months ago, and I’ve been waiting for it,” Enlow said. “There’s nothing bigger than getting the chance to compete for your country.

“I have a pretty good idea how I compare to the other players in the state. Now I’ll get to see how I match up against the top players from across the country.”

A total of 108 players from across the nation are invited to the tourney. Enlow said the week begins with workouts. Players will then be divided into teams and play against each other.

The tournament is part of the selection process for the 2016 18U team that will compete in Monterrey, Mexico, later this summer.

Enlow was 6-4 with a 1.54 earned run average and 93 strikeouts in 62.2 innings while helping the Gators advance to the Class 5A quarterfinals where they lost to eventual state champion Barbe. He was the District 5-5A Co-MVP with Catholic High shortstop Josh Smith, an LSU signee.

John Curtis standout Daniel Cabrera will be Enlow’s roommate. Cabrera is a USA baseball team veteran who competed internationally last year. West Monroe’s Jacob Pearson is the other Louisiana player invited. The 6-foot-3, 175-pound Enlow has a fastball that has been clocked as high as 94 mph. He won his last start for the Gauthier & Amedee Wombats on Tuesday and has been counting the days since.

“The goal is to make the team,” Enlow said. “No matter what happens, I know I’ll be able to learn things that will make me a better pitcher and player.”
