Dear Week 2 of the district schedule,

Good luck trying to top Week 1.

If the first week of district play is any indication, it’s going to be one heckuva season.

Brother Martin’s 40-37 overtime victory over John Curtis set the bar pretty high for the rest of the season.

By the way, it was the most points anyone has scored on Curtis since 1971, when Port Sulphur beat the Patriots 40-6.

And let’s not forget about Chalmette’s 17-12 victory over Landry-Walker, turning what everything thought was a two-team race between Landry-Walker and Ehret into a three-team race.

Or St. Augustine’s 32-20 victory over Jesuit, giving Al Jones his first win.

The biggest surprise?

Pope John Paul II’s 19-14 victory over Springfield, giving the Jaguars their first on-the-field victory since the end of the 2013 season.

So Week 2, you have your work cut out for you.

Here’s a look at the top five games this week.

5. Hahnville at St. Thomas More

Tigers have dropped two straight and now have to try to beat one of the top teams in Class 4A to get back on track.

4. Ponchatoula at Mandeville

Ponchatoula continued its winning ways in District 6-5A last week by handling Covington, and now gets what could be a stiff Thursday night test against the Skippers.

3. Brother Martin vs. St. Augustine

The Crusaders showed plenty of balance on offense last week in the epic win over Curtis.

They have to avoid an emotional letdown when they face a dangerous St. Augustine team looking to keep the momentum going from last week.

2. Holy Cross vs. Jesuit

It’s considered one of the oldest and best rivalries in the country. The Tigers have apparently found their groove, winners of three straight this season. The Blue Jays (2-2) have been up and down, but lead the series 55-38-5.

1. Carver vs. McDonogh 35

OK, show of hands everyone who predicted the Rams would be 4-0 at this point in the season. Me either. But now they get their stiffest test of the year when they face the Roneagles on Friday night at Pan Am Stadium.

It is the only local matchup this weekend between a pair of undefeated teams.

Good luck trying to match Week 1 though.
