NEW ORLEANS (AP)—Two first-half touchdown passes by Wildcats quarterback Cee Jay Powell proved to be enough as top-seeded Livonia defeated No. 3 Amite, 43-14 in the 2014 Allstate Sugar Bowl/LHSAA Class 3A State Championship game Saturday afternoon.
The win was the first 11-man football state championship in school history for Livonia.
Livonia (14-0) took an early 7-0 lead on a 1-yd. touchdown run by Powell.
Down 8-7, Powell connected with Kendrick Paul for his first touchdown pass, this one from nine yards out to give Livonia 15-8 advantage.
On the ensuing Wildcat possession, Powell hit Stephen Guidry for a 4-yd touchdown pass to extend the lead to 21-8. Powell connected with Paul on the first possession of the second half for a 4-yd. score to extend the lead to 29-8.
Amite’s (12-3) lone score of the first half came early in the first quarter on a 53-yd. touchdown run by Kenner Harrell.
After making the state championship game a year ago, Livonia was forced to forfeit their state runner-up trophy from a year ago due to the use of an ineligible player.
